Dr. Valarie Thomas is a multilingual (English, Spanish, Antillean & Haitian Creole) veterinarian, medical educator and administrator with over 12 years leadership and student support experience. She completed her veterinary degree at Universidad Agraria de La Habana in Havana, Cuba, and her Master of Science degree in Applied Molecular Microbiology, at the University of Nottingham, in the UK. She has led and taught medical education support programs that served diverse and international students, at internationally-located US medical schools.
Dr. Thomas has spent the majority of her career at Ross University School of Medicine(RUSM) and American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), assisting students in mastering the cognitive and non-cognitive skills essential for student success, and developing interventions and remediation programs for academically at-risk students.
She is an innovative and competent leader with a strong commitment to collaboration for the access, retention and graduation of students from all backgrounds. Dr. Thomas led her team in seamlessly transitioning the academic support programs at AUC to virtual platforms, for remote services, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Student surveys during this period rated the online services on par with in-person sessions. Dr. Thomas embodies the student-centered ethos, and could be seen regularly conversing with students around campus at the return of in-person learning.
In her free time she enjoys late-night comedic shows, reading classical literature, and karaoke. She is excited to begin working with you on your academic support needs!
